Things to see and do in Liverpool

Liverpool was named as the UK’s best large city break in in Britain in a Which survey in 2024. It is not a surprise as the city’s architecture, cultural sights and venues, entertainment and choice of restaurants and activities are made even more special by the welcoming atmosphere of this historic city.

You cannot visit Liverpool without exploring the historic waterfront with the Three Graces, including the iconic Liver Building, Albert Dock with its range of bars and restaurants, plus the Museum of Liverpool Life at Pier Head and Beatles Story at Royal Albert Dock. The waterfront is a c 25 minute walk from the university campus or 10 mins by bus. From the waterfront catch  a ferry cross the Mersey: www.merseyferries.co.uk

Liverpool One, the heart of the city’s shopping culture, is just a five minute walk from the waterfront.

On campus is the Garstang Museum of Archaeology https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/garstang-museum/ and Victoria Gallery & Museum (where the conference banquet will be held). Just a 15 minute walk away is the World Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Bluecoat arts and cultural centre, St Georges Hall, and Central Library with its historic exterior and Picton Reading Room. Bookmarking Liverpool University Campus either end of Hope Street are the city’s spectacular Catholic and Anglican cathedrals.

Beyond the city centre, you can visit Anfield for a Liverpool Football Club Stadium Tour https://bookings.liverpoolfc.com/stadiumtours/ ; Sefton Park Palm House https://palmhouse.org.uk/; or the Lady Lever Art Gallery at Port Sunlight with its impressive collection of pre-Raphaelite art. A 40 minute train journey from Liverpool Lime Street or Liverpool Central will take you to the Roman City of Chester with its Wall, Cathedral, Medieval Rows and quirky shopping.
